VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SCHOOL BUSING CAMPAIGN: It has come to the attention of many in in the community that the current school district transportation policies are unsafe for many of our children. Currently, children who live .75 miles or more away from school are eligible for busing based on the assumption that children less than .75 miles can walk to school. The problem is that unless a child lives extremely close to their school, it is unsafe and parents will not allow their children to walk, especially across Nassau Blvd., Woodfield Road and Hempstead Turnpike.
A grassroots campaign to change the district policy (to .3 miles, the distance from HANC to Nassau Blvd.) has started to change district policy. An election will take place on May 18th.
Please contact Ann Koffsky (565-4377) if you are able to volunteer in this effort. Volunteers will be asked, among other things, to hang signs, make phone calls, or give out fliers on Election Day. If you have any questions about the issue, you can also call Ann at the number above. Further information is available on Facebook at "West Hempstead Voters in Support of Fair Busing."
